I’ve had the privilege of working with Rodney Herrington for the past 10+ years.   Rodney invented the MSR MIOX Purifier, the first electrochlorinator launched into the Outdoor and Military markets.  The MSR MIOX Purifier won a design award from Popular Science magazine, and became the #1 selling Purifier in its first year on the market.

Rodney’s been a mentor for me in several areas:

·         Gaining funding from government agencies such as DARPA and the Marine Corps Systems Command to explore cutting-edge technologies.

·         Building integrated product teams that leverage the core strengths of the development partners.

·         Creating effective proposals and presentations for project review meetings.

·         Transitioning government funded research efforts in product sales opportunities.

·         Developing effective strategies for protecting, sharing, and licensing intellectual property.

I had the privilege of working with Rodney Herrington on the Water Disinfection Pen that he developed, a device that aided many different military units in the field and that offers great potential for civilian populations as well:

·         The initial batch of 60-70 Water Disinfection Pens I brought into the Afghanistan AOR, January 2002, had an incredible impact on reducing GI issues amoung US Embassy personnel, US Marines and Special Forces. A State Dept MD made an individual evaluation on the pen at our embassy in Pakistan and wrote a "glowing" report on the pens’ effectiveness.

·         I distributed an additional batch of pens to Marines fighting in Iraq in the spring of 2003, who found them very useful when forced to drink from local water sources.

·        During US PACOM exercises Cobra Gold 2003 and CG 2010 in Thailand, Water Pen operation was briefed during many COMREL (community relation) exercises at remote villages where water quality is quite bad. Many present were from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) who clearly recognized the value of the pen and made plans to purchase.
